Was Cardinal Newman a Homosexual?
Brief Chronicle of Events
A Homosexual Cardinal Newman?
August 20, 2008 A ‘Gay’ Newman - Homosexual activist Peter Tatchell claims that Cardinal John Henry Newman was gay. This allegation comes in response to the opening of Card. Newman's cause for beatification as well as the proposed exhumation of his body which was buried alongside his suspiciously close male friend. TIA leaves the topic of his homosexuality open to discussion.
August 23, 2008 Cardinal Newman Recognized as a Homosexual - The National Catholic Reporter confirms that it was Card. Newman's express wish to be buried alongside the man alleged to have been his homosexual lover; Ambrose St. John.
A Growing Controversy
August 26, 2008 The Polemic Intensifies - More reports surface alleging Newman's homosexuality. The Catholic Church is accused of wanting to move his body to coverup that he was buried with his lover. The advisor to the local cardinal says that such accusations are groundless and that Newmans body is being moved in anticipation of its veneration. Meanwhile a reader reports the controversy surrounding Newman's sexuality, with evidence both for and against Newman being a deviant.
October 7, 2008 The Grave is Emtpy - A report on the exhumation of Cardinal Newman shows that his body completely decomposed, leaving behind only the coffin handles and a few tassles of his Biretata. It is hoped that since the transfer of his body will not take place that the homosexual advocacy will fade away. The cause for the beatification continue.
August 13, 2009 Please do Not Insinuate - A reader protests that the accusations against Newman are groundless and presents evidence that they were fabricated by the homosexual movement. TIA maintains that there is still sufficient evidence to leave Newman suspect.
September 16, 2010 More Symptoms of Cardinal Newman's Homosexuality - A reader presents three documents showing Newman's propensity for homosexuality. The first is a wiki article referring to several scholars who mention Newman's effeminate manners, the second is one of Newman's letters that portray his sentimental love for his friend Ambrose St. John, and the third is an account showing Newman's eccentric reaction to the death of the same.
September 28, 2010 Reader Defends Newman - One reader points out that Newman's frank expressions of friendship for Ambrose St. John is the very reason why he not a homosexual. Any illicit relationship between Newman and his friend would have been kept more secret, and Newman, a good writer by all accounts, was too intelligent to use undisguised language if there was anything he needed to conceal.
